Book Review for The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

one and only ivanThis 2012 Newberry Medal Award Winner is also a nominee for this year's Dorothy Canfield Fischer Award, Vermont’s annual student choice book competition. So it's no surprise that this well-written and touching story narrated by Ivan, a silverback gorilla living as a caged attraction at a shopping mall has won the hearts of many readers.  Ivan is a gentle thinker, an artist and companion to some of the other animals at the small attraction.  He rarely thinks of his jungle home anymore, until he meets Ruby, a young elephant addition to the menagerie. Soon, Ivan will be forced to make some changes to help his animal friends, and must rely upon help from some human friends as well. This book is creatively written and published in very short, usually one page, entries by Ivan. I found it to be an easy yet sometimes deeply thought provoking read. The library has two copies of this popular book in our collection. Recommended for ages 9 to adult.

Book Review for Tap The Magic Tree by Christie Matheson (recommended for children ages 4 to 8)

Reviewed by Children’s Librarian Tamara Hamm

Tap the Tree BookEvery season brings amazing, seemingly magic changes to the planet on which we reside. Trees renew their leafy foliage, bud, spread their seed, many lose their leaves only to begin again in the spring. Author and illustrator Christie Matheson has captured this age old cycle with a refreshing interactive format in her recently released picturebook Tap The Magic Tree. Each page contains a short script with an instruction to the reader to perform a task, such as tapping the illustration of the bare brown tree, or to brush away the pink petals and blow the tree a tiny kiss.  This makes for an engaging, funny and educational reading experience.  A good recommendation for a springtime read aloud. Come check it out at the library!
